Subject: [ICT4S] Call for contributions to The Second Workshop on Digitally Enabled Sharing and Sustainability (DESS)
To: <ict4s@lists.ifi.uzh.ch>

Dear Colleagues

We are cordially inviting submissions to The Second Workshop on
Digitally Enabled Sharing and Sustainability (DESS) that will be held
this year in conjunction with the 7th international conference on ICT
for Sustainability (ICT4S 2020) in Bristol, UK.

Overview

The sharing economy is a prime example of the power of ICT as an enabler
of change in socio-economic structures. New forms of sharing, enabled by
online platforms, are changing not only patterns of consumption, but
also social relationships and economic structures.
The affordability (low-cost or free services), improved accessibility
(via smartphones and other digital end-user devices), and convenience
(real-time information available at fingertips) of digital sharing
facilitates access to a variety of resources beyond the constraints of
traditional sharing. This unprecedented efficiency of sharing results in
an optimization of resource consumption by increasingly turning the idle
and unproductive time of resources into productive utilization.
Increased efficiency, however, can trigger additional demand (rebound
effect). From an environmental perspective, the additional demand for
services in the DSE may cancel out the savings effect of increased
efficiencies; leading new environmental problems caused by rebound
effects. From a social point of view, it is also important to
investigate which types of the digital sharing economy contribute to
providing a decent life for its participants or may, conversely, cause
more concerns regarding unfair working conditions and other
socio-economic issues.
Questions of sustainability-related contributions or issues of digital
sharing are not thoroughly resolved yet, even the academic discourse
identifying them is still in its initial stages. Sharpening and
discussing such questions will assist us in understanding the long-term
potentials of the digital sharing economy, whether positive or negative,
to change people's lives and the global environment as well.

Participants
This workshop aims to initiate motivating discussions and lightening
talks among interested people from academia, including PhD students,
participants from industry, and anyone who has an interest in the topic.

Submissions
We invite short papers (Max. 5 pages) and short position paper (1-2
pages) for presentation and motivating discussions at the session.
Participation without own contributions are also welcome.

Deadline for submission: 15 April 2020
Feedback: within two weeks after submission
Camera-ready: 15 May 2020
Workshop date: 26 June 2020
