Hi Nico,

It's my pleasure, thank YOU for voicing your support for this! I especially like this line: "Repairability, upgradability and long lasting design strategies need to be applied to the whole process in tech manufacturing."

I've been advocating for this now for years, so I appreciate that it comes from you given your experience in the CN community. Also, you're absolutely right about sharing (and email lists, and many other seemingly ubiquitous or inconsequential actions of our digital lives).

In case you think you'll be at RightsCon and would like to host a session on anything related to these points or to your work at Altermundi, I highly encourage it!

Although I won't be in Costa Rica, I hope to see you again soon. It's always a pleasure, and you know you can always count on me for solidarity. Keep up the amazing work you do!

And have a very happy holiday all!

-Michael

Hi Michael,
Thanks for bringing this up.
I think there are very important points that need to be rised in relation to this point.
Repairability, upgradability and long lasting design strategies need to be applied to the whole process in tech manufacturing.
Then something a colleague had been mentioning to me is the environmental cost of media sharing: it looks like a harmful actions, but because it is such a massive phenomenon it's environmental footprint needs to be understood.
Also, how CNs create more organic paths for the information and bring back the power to communities implies that they can do direct action into them.
Some quick thoughts... Happy to discuss it further.

Hi everyone,

I want to bring this to your attention in case you're not aware. Each year, Access Now hosts RightsCon – the world's leading summit on human rights in the digital age.

RightsCon 2020 will be hosted in Costa Rica from 9-12 June, and they have invited me to join the programme committee as the co-chair of the Environmental Sustainability and Human Resilience track.

Given our climate crisis, the lack of consideration to sustainability within the ICT ecosystem, and the impact that mineral mining, e-waste dumping, irresponsible production and consumption, and a host of other related issues have a significant impact on both the environment and human rights, it's imperative that we ensure this topic is on the agenda and colesque around it as a community.

If you or anyone you know is interested in submitting a session, proposals can be submitted via this online form until 14 January 2020. In case you have any questions, you can check out the submission guide or contact me directly.

Please share this call with anyone you think may be interested.

Best,
-Michael Oghia
