Creating an enabling website for community networks

Dear all, I thought of reminding everyone of our initial goal of creating an interactive website, that would take people's input on their circumstances (location, existing hardware, legal spectrum, amount of people) and give a possible configuration for hardware and software that would be needed to build a community network with those given parameters. I realize that we are still at the phase of collecting information from community networks from around the globe for this purpose, but we should also start thinking of the next phase, where we start making this data usable in the way I just described. I think we could be doing this by tagging and categorizing the informational resources we're collecting for our current website, instead of just listing links to external sources. Since many of us are at the IGF, I think it would be great if we could have a little brainstorming session on this effort. I think even half an hour around lunchtime would already advance this goal significantly - categorizing information at the collection phase would probably save us a lot of work later, when we'd start to have dozens or even hundreds of documents on our website. This is the final day and there seems to be an hour gap between 14 and 15. Maybe we could meet at the Serpent cafe? Hoping to see you there, -Raoul

LibreRouter report - ahead of the IGF

Hi everyone, As the IGF is approaching, and there are so many sessions looking at how can we really connect the next billion, it is perfect timing to invite you to explore the Final Report produced by the team of the LibreRouter project, available for download from the Seed Alliance website. http://seedalliance.net/librerouter-south-south-collaboration-for-local-acc… The work of the Seed Alliance to support Community Wireless has been funded over the last 2 years by IDRC and it will be enhanced by the contribution from Internet Society so we see this report as a wonderful opportunity to reflect on what comes next and the challenges ahead, not only for those on the field working so hard to get this ideas off the grown and into working products, but for all of us, committed to expand and improve local access. Your friends and colleagues Carlos and Nico, and all the people that has rooted for them and got on board this project (mentioned on the report) deserve an applause! Well done! I hope it is just the beginning for LibreRouter and that we will continue to learn more as the devices get deployed and more networks get connected. LibreRouter team will be at the IGF, and presenting at the WS Workshop 71 about devices/infrastructure, content and innovative business models as drivers for connectivity http://sched.co/CSCw and will be at the Seed Alliance booth on Wednesday to do a demonstration of the prototype. DC3 logo and the cover picture that we have on our Twitter account

Hello everyone, I'm just doing some finishing touches on https://comcon.nu and I wasn't able to find the logo and cover picture that we have on our Twitter account from my emails. Does somebody have these at hand? I could still add them before our meeting on Tuesday. This is basically the first draft of the site, it's by no means finished, but at least it's working and browsable now. I'd also like to add some social media links and realised that we didn't even have a facebook page, so I made one: https://www.facebook.com/DC3-Dynamic-Coalition-on-Community-Connectivity-73… This URL can probably be changed into something catchier. We should also make a Twitter post about the DC3 being here in IGF. Even a few times a year with 100% solid tweets would be good, creating some history for the account etc -Raoul

We find this extremely disappointing, but take solace in the fact that communities with their own networks will face the least harm by the decision. We aren't mourning. We are in the office this morning with an even greater dedication to community networks. Listening yesterday to the Commissioners in the majority -- who just finished working for the big monopolies or will go on to lobbying jobs with those companies or both -- pretend that they are helping small businesses made my heart pound. Please help us continue the important work of raising the profile of broadband networks that are accountable to communities rather than shareholders. A little more than 10 years ago, I began working here at ILSR to help communities thrive in spite of the big monopolies and crony capitalism in D.C. Two years ago, my wife and I had our first child. The last two years left me really tired at times. Worn out. Burned out. No more. After yesterday, I'm revitalized! I'm ready for another 10 years of helping community after community regain control of its future. The list of interested communities is growing faster than it ever has before. We have a great team here, doing great & unique research. We made the first map of rural cooperative fiber networks. We dug into FCC data and found that 100 million Americans can get broadband only from the four big monopolies that have a history of violating net neutrality (AT&T, Verizon, Charter, and Comcast). And we mapped where they all live. This work gives me hope. We need your help to keep it up. Please donate and keep us going. Spread our work around and rate our podcasts so more people will find us.
