Any updates on this ?Internet access for refugees and migrants The Internet is only truly open and free when everyone has access to it. In the Netherlands, this is often insufficiently the case for refugees and migrants. While there is an enormous need here. This project wants to do something about this, starting with the technical development of WiFi hotspots, so that these groups are no longer forced to use their mobile data bundles for the internet. (Call 2 - 2015) *The project has been completed (December 2016)* . The project realized internet access at two locations in Amsterdam where asylum seekers and refugees reside. In addition, the Refugee Hotspot was also developed, an open source portable device that allows refugees and asylum seekers without a permanent residence to access the internet. This is why we must think about connectivity as infrastructure and as a for-profit service. The value (NPV for finance people) has to be measured appropriately. In this case, it is not how much money can be returned to shareholders but how much value can be returned to associated as a whole. Alas, efforts like Starlink have a similar goal. In the short term, they may be profitable in their niche market, but as connectivity becomes pervasive, we need to shift our thinking from for-profit pipes to creating opportunity. Loon could've been part of that but failed to escape the gravity of reductionist economics. This is a point I try to make on this list – we need to focus on communities as the unit of funding and value rather than modeling our efforts on the legacy telecom idea of communications as a service. � � Bob Frankston https://Frankston.com �

CWG - Internet meeting

Hi all, Article 19 presented a contribution to the Council Working Group for Internet-related public policy https://www.itu.int/en/council/cwg-internet/Pages/consultation-sep2020.aspx as part of our work in the ITU. Since many members of this list also presented a contribution to the same Open Call I am reaching out to you to invite anyone who is going to attend the CWG meeting on the 25th January for a chat where we could talk about possible strategies, e.g. which main topics we find the most relevant and want to be reflected in the final compilation document that will be passed on to the ITU members.
