Glenn, you’re raising the issue which I want to understand better. I’m on a flight to CES
and don’t know how much time I’ll have to be involved in the conversation this week.
I agree that it is important to have a sustainable funding model but, as I wrote in
http://rmf.vc/BBToInfrastructure the question is whether connectivity is treated like a
billable service or provided to the community as shared infrastructure without a paywall.
Are there examples of the latter being supported by Airfund?

HI All,
We just got confirmation from Ben and Melissa who are in charge of the Airband Initiative
and they stated that they are now opening this program up to Non-profits as long as they
met the conditions listed below which seem to be
1) have revenue coming in and 2) a solid business / financial model (strategic/long-term).
So if Bosco or any other non-profit community network wants to apply they should go ahead
and apply if they meet these conditions.
Thanks Ben for jumping in and getting clarifications. This is indeed good news
Best,

Ben is correct. The externally facing material definitely calls out for-profit entities,
and we do not plan to adjust the material that is currently out there. That said, we had
some interesting conversations at IGF with the Community Network community, and decided
that we could be open to considering a nonprofit as long as the below conditions are in
order.
Make sense?

Hi Steve, Judith
Just to clarify re the Microsoft Airband Fund, I think the key is that applicants need to
have revenue coming in and a solid business / financial model (strategic/long-term). So I
understand that the Fund would be open to considering applications from non-commercial
bodies as long as they have that kind of sustainable and strategic financial model.
I am copying Melissa Sassi, who can help if you have further questions.
Kind regards

Hi All –
Matt Rantanen (Cree Indian and much more) was asked to speak in the closing segment of the
IGF. He is a community builder, CN manager, and a great colleague.
Thanks go to Renata, Judith, Glenn and others who are making sure that indigenous
communities have a seat at the table (ISOC and APC helping there, too, along with CNs
around the planet).
Recognition of the “Closing words” are here…
"indigenous peoples of the world should have a seat at the table on
Internet governance and be included in the decision-making level of
the process."
