Hi everyone,
Please see the email below from the Access Now team – the organization
behind the RightsCon Summit Series. The conference is being held in Toronto
in May 2018, the same week as the ICT for Sustainability (ICT4S)
conference. Hopefully we can spur some synergies between the ICT4S and
Internet governance/digital rights communities, especially since they are
introducing a sustainability track.
Best,
-Michael Oghia

Dear Friends,
We’re inviting you to set the agenda at RightsCon Toronto
<https://www.rightscon.org/> (May 16-18, 2018) by designing and building a
session through our Call for Proposals
<https://www.rightscon.org/submission/>, open until November 24, 2017.
*We’re particularly excited to see your submissions under the track for
Digital Tech and Sustainable Development, as well as Environment, Health,
Land, and Labour. We are looking to expand the program on these issues for
this year’s event, and it will be an excellent opportunity for
collaboration across sectors. *
Why lead a RightsCon session?
RightsCon is home to the world’s leading community of movers and shakers in
the digital age. The event brings together policy makers, business leaders,
government representatives, technologists, campaigners, and human rights
defenders from around the world. RightsCon Toronto is set to be our biggest
and most impactful event yet, with over 2000 participants from 110
countries and 750 organizations.
Leading a session is the best way to make a direct impact at RightsCon:
from identifying and mapping problems, to connecting with the right allies
and partners, and workshopping solutions and ultimately driving change. By
getting involved in the program and setting the agenda, you will gain
expert insight, build new strategic partnerships, and influence global
norms.
What does a RightsCon session look like?
Timely, engaging, outcomes-oriented, and creative. We suggest you start by
reading our submission guide <https://rightscon.org/submissionguide>, as it
offers helpful tips and suggestions for what makes a great proposal! There
are many different formats you can choose from:
-
Need to get our community together to problem-solve a major challenge?
Design a Fishbowl.
-
Want to launch or showcase a new internet freedom product? Do a Tech Demo
.
-
Have a specific policy or advocacy strategy you want to map out? Lead a
Workshop.
-
Looking to give a crash course on a recent development in your field?
Give a Lightning Talk.
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach in setting the RightsCon agenda, but
the key to a successful session is picking the right format to engage
participants and achieve your objectives. Still not sure which format is
best? We’re here to help, email us at conference(a)accessnow.org.

Hello, All –
Please find a grant opportunity: https://oc.telecominfraproject.com/opencellular-grant-program/
“OpenCellular Grants (OCG) is a program to fund, promote and accelerate the non-commercial development and deployment of OpenCellular (OC) equipment in rural areas where access to cellular is limited. The successful development and adoption of OC in rural communities could lead to significantly more people gaining access to cellular service.
The OCG grant program is specifically designed to address this opportunity.”
Data about OC is here: https://oc.telecominfraproject.com/opencellular-grant-program/

Hi everyone,
Earlier this year, I began the endeavor to build bridges between the
Internet governance / infrastructure community(ies) and the sustainable ICT
academic and research community. In many ways, current Internet technology
is not sustainable. This relates to overall lack of design consideration of
ICTs for sustainability (such as recycling or energy scaling), and includes
issues such as pollution, electronic waste (e-waste), and energy use.
Dr. Mike Hazas was one of the first people who inspired me to do more work
in this field, and he was the keynote speaker at a EuroDIG roundtable
workshop on sustainable Internet access held in June. After the session, he
connected with members of RIPE NCC's external relations team who encouraged
him to apply for one of the academic fellowships (RACI) to attend RIPE 75
in Dubai, and I am delighted to share his presentation and lecture:

Internet Services and Energy Demand

I encourage everyone to continue to consider sustainability in all of its
forms going forward, and encourage discussions around this topic. I also
CCd him in case anyone would like to raise a comment or question.
Thank you,
-Michael

Hi everyone,
I was just introduced to a really cool, open-source project: Planet
Friendly Web. They have a host of resources and an open-source code library
seeking to help decarbonize the Web and make the Internet more
environmentally sustainable.
It might be useful for your networks, and I'm CCing Chris Adams who is
leading it in case you have any questions.

Dear all,
If you have any suggestion for the image to be put on the cover of the DC3 report, please share them on-list or send me a private message.
Ideally the image should represent a network and be quite minimal (as you would expect from a book cover) and either in Creative Commons license or of your authorship (in the latter case you will be acknowledged as the image author)
I would suggest something more or less like the picture below. Suggestions are welcome
All the best
Luca

Hello to all –
Please see the data below about an opportunity for fellowships:
“The Shuttleworth Foundation is accepting applications for its fellowship program through October 23rd. We are sharing this opportunity in case it is of interest to you or someone in your network. The fellowships are offered to individuals to implement their idea for social change—at the intersection of technology, knowledge and learning, with openness being the key requirement.”

Dear all,
A few updates from the activities of the netCommons project on legal
and
policy issues (and some kind requests for support):
A press release is out as a follow-up from our open letter and in light
of recent developments:
https://netcommons.eu/?q=news/european-governments-seek-greater-oligopo
lization-telecom-infrastructures
(please help us to spread the message in favor of diversity in the
telecom ecosystem)
A closed workshop at the European Parliament is coming soon:
https://netcommons.eu/?q=content/eu-parliament-workshop-community-netwo
rks-and-telecom-regulation
(please feel free to share ideas and raise issues that would be
important to address during the workshop)
There is an on-going survey on the legal obligations of European CNs:
https://d52netcommons.limequery.com/845151
(if you are part of a EU CN and you have not filled the survey it would
be very helpful if you would so before October 10th)
And, there is also an open position for 12 months for a researcher on
telocommunications law at the University of Trento:
https://netcommons.eu/?q=news/expression-interest-junior-research-posit
