We find this extremely disappointing, but take solace in the fact that communities with their own networks will face the least harm by the decision. We aren't mourning. We are in the office this morning with an even greater dedication to community networks. Listening yesterday to the Commissioners in the majority -- who just finished working for the big monopolies or will go on to lobbying jobs with those companies or both -- pretend that they are helping small businesses made my heart pound. Please help us continue the important work of raising the profile of broadband networks that are accountable to communities rather than shareholders. A little more than 10 years ago, I began working here at ILSR to help communities thrive in spite of the big monopolies and crony capitalism in D.C. Two years ago, my wife and I had our first child. The last two years left me really tired at times. Worn out. Burned out. No more. After yesterday, I'm revitalized! I'm ready for another 10 years of helping community after community regain control of its future. The list of interested communities is growing faster than it ever has before. We have a great team here, doing great & unique research. We made the first map of rural cooperative fiber networks. We dug into FCC data and found that 100 million Americans can get broadband only from the four big monopolies that have a history of violating net neutrality (AT&T, Verizon, Charter, and Comcast). And we mapped where they all live. This work gives me hope. We need your help to keep it up. Please donate and keep us going. Spread our work around and rate our podcasts so more people will find us. Any donation amount helps - knowing that you care enough to give us material support will help to keep us energized in the tough days ahead. We aren't going to stop at ensuring an open Internet. Reports on Governance Instruments and their Application to CNs

Hi, we have two related reports in the netCommons project, both of them cover the topic of "Governance Instruments and their Application to CNs", one produced in July 2017 (D1.3) and another due by end of this year (D1.4). They discuss about the outside organizational model as a "canvas", and the inside organizational and governance models of several community networks, and several organizational patterns and anti-patterns. New Cloudy release (Community Cloud software, commons governance, pilot study, economic model)

Hi, a few days ago we made a new release of the Cloudy community cloud software. The announcement with details is here: https://cloudy.community/news/ Under the hood there is improved support for Docker containers (also docker compose) and also support/integration of IPFS (a P2P web/file service with off-line access). Many new applications can be installed thanks to the docker support, and several are prepared to run just from the click of a button (like Etherpad for group editing, Home Assistant for smart homes, next/own-Cloud for a bunch of web apps for file sharing and communications, instant messaging like Rocket Chat or Riot, Mosquitto for IoT, among others. General info: https://cloudy.community/ and code: https://github.com/Clommunity In addition, we have completed an extended research paper that describes the organizational and governance models of a Community Cloud as Commons, the lessons learned from the last 2 years of a pilot with earlier versions of the Cloudy software in the guifi.net community with about 60 devices deployed, and a socio-economic analysis of the competitiveness of community clouds in comparison with commercial cloud providers. For instance, if there was a satellite constellation in low-Earth orbit that provided affordable services, which is what SpaceX, OneWeb, and Boing want to do, then it would completely change the landscape (this would be in the early- to mid-2020s). Larry Press provides great updates about developments in this space (pun intended) on CircleID. Regarding batteries, with things like graphene-based batteries that are being developed and other new, more energy efficient battery and energy storage technologies, it's only a matter of time. Whether or not they will be affordable enough to scale is a different matter, but current trends paint an optimistic picture. Of course, I will definitely support more of the advocacy you speak of, Jane. Community networks and local access monthly newsletter

(apologies for cross-posting) Hi all, If you are interested in keeping up to date with news and information around community networks and local access, we invite you to subscribe to the local access newsletter that the Association for Progressive Communications (APC) will launch in December 2017. The purpose of this newsletter is to provide monthly updates on news and reports, calls for grants, fellowships and awards, and information on events around community networks and local access. There are a great many news items and reports about innovations in low-cost communication technologies, locally owned and managed communication infrastructure systems, case studies on community networks in the global South, updates on regulatory changes (at the global, national and sub-national levels), announcements of funding opportunities, calls for events, and so on, that are shared in different mailing lists, Twitter feeds and other channels. Our aim is to crowdsource this information and bring it all together in one place on a monthly basis, so that we can share it with everyone who wants to stay up to date on this increasingly critical topic. We believe that a better informed community of practitioners could make a significant contribution to the implementation and operation of more resilient locally owned telecommunications infrastructure. CN Fellowships for IGF 2017

Hello Colleagues – In coordination with ISOC’s 2018 planning and a key focus on community networks, we are coming to you with a rapid call for CN fellowships. This CN fellowship for IGF 2017 will support air travel and hotel costs only. Key data points: 1. Send an email by 11 December at 1700 UTC to coffin(a)isoc.org and buell(a)isoc.org indicating “why” as a community network manager, operator, researcher, or enabler you would like a fellowship to the IGF 2017. 2. Criteria: -You must have worked with, managed, created, researched, or enabled a community network for more than one year. We consider community radio as part of CNs. -You must not have received an ISOC fellowship to the IGF in the past. 3. There will be a strong focus on women working with CNs, CNs in Indigenous communities, CNs working with refugees, CNs working in disaster and emergency response situations. We know time is short, but we have an opportunity to help some folks get to Geneva for IGF2017 and to introduce you around or have others do the same. Please forward to folks you know.
