Dear all,
As some of you may have already seen on twitter<https://twitter.com/1lucabelli/status/1060240942240882688>, yesterday evening I received the finalised pdf of the Community Network Manual, which will be printed just in time for when I will board for Paris :)
As I previously mentioned, it is a pleasure to announce that the Community Network Manual is published in partnership by FGV<https://portal.fgv.br/en>, ITU<https://www.itu.int/en/Pages/default.aspx> and ISOC<https://www.internetsociety.org/> and features some truly excellent contributions from DC3 members, analysing how to build Community Networks and how to make them scalable, sustainable and law-compliant.
As a reminder, the book will be launched at our session on Community Connectivity: When the Unconnected Build Connectivity<https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/content/igf-2018-dc-community-conn…>, on Monday 12 November, at 11:20.
I look forward to meeting you there and I will bring as many copies as possible (at least 80) so that you can all have one. Of course, as all previous volumes, the book will be freely available, under Creative Commons License, and the online version will be released during the DC3 session.
As a teaser a further, below you will find the table of content as well as the early praise by Bruno Ramos (ITU) and Andrew Sullivan (ISOC)
All the best
Luca
"Community networks represent a valuable alternative model that deserves to be explored to improve access to Information and Communication Technologies to underserved communities worldwide. ITU is committed to connecting the entire world's people and this book and the work of the UN IGF Dynamic Coalition on Community Connectivity offer inspiring and transparent guidance to foster digital inclusion."
Bruno Ramos, Director for the Americas Regional Office of the International Telecommunication Union
"Community Networks offer a credible solution for building a digital future that puts people first. This volume is a testament to the excellent work of the IGF Dynamic Coalition on Community Connectivity. It is a long-awaited guide that will allow many to participate in the Internet's evolution, building an Internet for everyone.."

Engineering for Change has partnered with Dr. Henry Louie, Co-Founder of
Kilowatts For Humanity, to bring our community a unique and comprehensive
webinar series to tackle some of the most pressing issues in energy for
under-served communities.
Our Off-Grid Energy Webinar Series
<https://engineeringforchange.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b828011d5ef…>
presented
by Dr. Henry Louie will help participants:
- Understand the need for improved electricity access in rural
communities
- Learn the fundamental principles of off-grid system components such as
batteries, solar arrays, hydro and wind turbines, and biomass systems and
how they can be combined to provide reliable electricity
- Find out how off-grid systems are designed, including best practices
in load and resource estimation, component sizing and project life-cycle
considerations
Join us for the second part of the series, Why the Power Grid Isn't
Everywhere: The Role of Grid Extension in Electricity Access, on November
14, and scroll down to view the first webinar, along with registration
details for all upcoming webinars in the series.

*Why the Power Grid Isn't Everywhere: The Role of Grid Extension in
Electricity Access*
*November 14, 2018 | 11:00 am EST (convert to your time
<https://engineeringforchange.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b828011d5ef…>)*
Why is it that, after more than 100 years of effort, power lines have not
made their way to every community on earth? Is it possible that certain
communities will “leap frog” the power grid and instead use off-grid
systems? This webinar describes the important and sometimes overlooked role
of grid extension and grid enhancement in providing electricity access to
remote communities. We will explore the advantages and disadvantages of
grid extension compared to using off-grid systems. The webinar covers
economic models for grid extension, and the technical challenges of
supplying remote communities with grid-connected power.
Please remember to join us November 14th (Wednesday) at 11:00 AM EST.
*In this webinar you will learn:*
- the role of grid extension in achieving universal electricity access
- the conditions that make off-grid systems preferable over grid
extension
- the basic considerations in distribution line design
- how to develop a cost model for grid extension and use it compare
electrification options

Hi all,
I remember some weeks ago it emerged interest in submarine cable, on the list.
At FGV, we are going to host a day-long seminar on the Governance of Submarine Cables, on Wednesday, in partnership with CGI.br, the French Consulate, Internet Sans Frontières and the Brazilian Consumer Protection Institute. See https://www.cg.org.br/noticia/releases/seminario-inedito-sobre-operacao-e-u…
If anyone in the Rio area is interested, sejam benvindos :)
The event will be in Portuguese but our FGV fellow Félix Blanc will be in Paris for the IGF (he is going to organise an IGF workshop on the same topic) and I can put anyone interested in contact with him to have further insight on our debates and on future work, if anyone is interested.
All the best
Luca
Dear all,
As the IGF is approaching, I just wanted to share the updated agenda of the DC3 Session COMMUNITY NETWORKS: When The Unconnected Build Connectivity and remind you not to forget IGF registration https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/content/igf-2018-registration
Here is the link to the DC3 session https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/content/community-networks-when-th…
I have also the great pleasure to announce that the "The Community Network Manual" which is the 2018 DC3 outcome will be released as a joint publication of the ITU, FGV and ISOC. The book is going to be finalised by tomorrow and will be send to press by Friday to be ready for the IGF. Of course, free copies of the volume will be distributed at the session (courtesy of ISOC) and the book will be released under Creative Commons License.
The IGF Secretariat has requested we identify 3 messages before the session. It is a quite curious request, as we cannot identify "messages" before having a debate but as we have to comply with UN formalities (although probably no one is even going to read the content of the "messages"), I suggest we propose something based on the session workshop description.
My proposal is to utilise the following 3 "messages":
1. Community networks (CNs) improve connectivity while empowering Internet users. Community networks rely on the active participation of local communities in the design, development and management of network infrastructure as a common resource.
2. CNs give rise to new infrastructures, new governance models and new business opportunities and facilitate the free flow of information and knowledge, filling the lacunae left by the traditional Internet access-provision paradigm.
1. The Community Network Manual is the 2018 outcome of the Dynamic Coalition on Community Connectivity (DC3). Its goal is to provide guidance on how to build, organise and deploy CNs. It offers toolkits, guidelines and instructions to be used by all interested stakeholders for the concrete constructions of such networks. All interested stakeholder are invited to join DC3 members for presentation of the CN Manual and to freely share it.
Please feel free to share any comments and suggestions
All the best
