Hello everyone, I hope you have had a great hollidays and a happy new year.
As you may know after IGF me and Nico Pace stayed in Mexico to evaluate
possible alliances with the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdG) among its
different faculties, here is a short summary:
It is important to emphasize that nothing could have been possible without
the guidance and constant support of Mr. Jaime Olmos, who is in charge of
the Network Operations Center (NOC) at the UdG, he has managed to interview
each and every one of the people we needed to know. Thanks Jaime !!!
Virtual University of UdG and community networks:
The UdG has a Virtual University (UdGV), with a subproject CASA: Learning
Communities and Academic Services. This project is based on a physical
Internet access center where people can be trained academically in the UdGV
through the internet.
After the dialogue with the authorities of the UdGV we agreed with the
vision that these institutions serve as an anchor to promote community
networks, sharing the connectivity they provide there with those that are
formed.
In order to move forward with this vision we set up a pilot program, a
proposal where the physical infrastructure that the university has served
as a link between the university backbone and the community network that it
is intended to promote (using the Altermundi model), the university has
Provided a strategic location where they consider that the project is
viable and necessary, the community chosen is the "Casa Comunitaria" of San
Antonio de Juanacaxtle, Jalisco (20 ° 32'46.5 "N 103 ° 09'18.8" W
20.546245, -103.155215)
This proposal is in the stage of being discussed by the board of directors
of this institution so we expect to receive a response next week at the end
of the holiday period, however, the previous response of its managers has
been quite positive.
"Preparatorias" of UdG and community networks:
The UdG also has a "Preparatorias" project similar to an us highschool,
this project is consolidated and manages more than 300 buildings throughout
the region of Jalisco, the idea with this program is that their physical
infrastructure that currently has connectivity through the backbone
provided by the university could manage a gateway to the community network
of an isolated region. This project has also had a favorable response on
the part of its director, this approach is waiting for an official meeting
to present the structure evaluation of the pilot project.
Curricular program in the UdG and UdGV with content on community networks:
In some meetings with professors of the Engineering schools (CUCEI) and
technology programs of other units (CUCEA) and in charge of the Information
Technology Management Center (CGTI) we have agreed to collaborate so that
their subjects and their programs include material on community networks
and even the creation of proposals of thesis to involve the student
population to be sensitized by the problems that we face.
The UdGV has also agreed to create a special curriculum on community
networks so that it serves as basic and advanced education for the
communities that, through their CASA project, have created a community
network, that is, to continue to strengthen knowledge and growth.
Other approaches with the university community:
Intermittent scenarios of connectivity and education:
Those in charge of the virtual classrooms at the UdGV have participated in
their concern regarding the problem of intermittent connectivity, so we
have made available to their workgroup in order to find solutions that
provide fault tolerance in their environments That the education of its
students is not affected by these inconveniences, for this we have talked
about local servers, synchronized stations of content, etc ...
Low-cost self-contained laboratory:
Another problem that we have been involved in is that the equipment to
create laboratories in these communities is the high price of the equipment
(medium-high ganna workstations), so we have considered the creation of
laboratories of low cost and with autonomous capacity like for example:
http://www.solarpoweredlearning.com/
This has been taken in a good way by those responsible for this program and
we await their return from holidays.
We'll let you know how this is evolving.
Any comments are welcome, greetings to all and happy new year,
Maureen and Nicolas

Hi guys, after recovering from the backlog and jet lag, I prepared this
document to share with friends, colleagues, and you. This is a first
draft. I realized I could not summarize in words or just links the
experience, and I'd even forget it soon. I hope it's useful and I think
easier and quicker to have a rough personal view of all that instead of
spending too much time in developing a consensus view. I'd appreciate if
you have any quick comment, reaction, contribution. It was great
meeting you all. See you soon, Leandro.
Hi everyone,
Some more interesting links for you. Specifically this paper:
Local networks for local interactions: Four reasons why and a way forward
<http://firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/7123>
Panayotis Antoniadis
*This paper frames the role of community (wireless) networks, and other
forms of grassroots DIY networking models, as complementary to the Internet
communication infrastructures hosting local services for facilitating local
interactions, as drivers for a more convivial and sustainable life in the
city. Today, only a few Internet-based global corporations mediate our
everyday online interactions, without respecting our rights to privacy,
freedom of expression and self-determination; they depend for their own
sustainability on the exploitation of the immense collected information and
design power toward private, commercial and political objectives. But when
communication is meant to take place between people in physical proximity,
local community networks can provide an alternative infrastructure owned
and designed by those concerned. The paper analyses four key reasons,
practical, social, political, and scientific, why such DIY networks should
be considered as a viable complementary infrastructure for local
communications even when Internet access is available. Through analogies
with other relevant domains of local action, namely complementary
currencies and cooperative housing, I conclude by addressing the dichotomy
between local action and global coordination. I advocate for the
co-creation of convivial ICT tools for building local communities, or
better hybrid spaces of local cooperation, which are larger in size than
the small in “small is beautiful” and smaller, but in many cases more
diverse, than recent imaginaries of the “multitude”.*
Best,
-Michael

Subject: [ICT4S] 1st International Workshop on Design and Innovation in
Software Engineering (DISE)

------------------------------------------------------------

Call for Papers
1st International Workshop on Design and Innovation in Software Engineering
(DISE)
In Conjunction with the International Conference on Software Engineering
(ICSE)
Buenos Aires, Argentina
May 23, 2017
http://step.lut.fi/dise/
------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
The DISE (Design and Innovation in Software Engineering) workshop aims to
attract academic software engineering researchers, designers from various
communities and industry practitioners engaged in software engineering
innovation and the use of design
methods for co-creation and open innovation. We are interested in how we
innovate in software engineering, meaning how we build and launch on the
market new software products, systems and services as well as how do we
develop the tools and methods required for their engineering. Innovation by
design, design thinking, user experiences design, and design science
research are proven methods for innovation. They have the power to
supplement existing software engineering design practices. How are they
used in software engineering is also a question this first edition of the
DISE workshop will aim to address.
What are the avenues from cross-pollinating design disciplines and software
engineering?
Innovation is vital for the long-term sustainability of any software
development company and design for innovation is or should be a crucial
stage in the development of any software product, system and service. As
argued by Chesbrough, an open innovation pioneer: “companies that don’t
innovate die” In the recent years, serious concerns have been raised on the
failure of development processes, methods and tools to support innovation.
The workshop aims to be a research living lab to answer these questions
while building an academic research agenda and network on the design and
innovation concerns in software
engineering. Participants are encouraged to investigate multidisciplinary
design research and design thinking approaches and their integration into
the wider engineering and innovation processes. The workshop will bring
together researchers and practitioners from various fields to look across
various design theories and schools including the traditional software
design methodologies, innovation by design, design and system thinking and
user-centric design, participatory design, eco-design and innovation
approaches.
The following are some of the questions that participants are invited to
address:
• How can design science and design theories provide guidance and inform
more effective innovations in software engineering?
• How can designers collaborate with software engineers so we can improve
communication between design for innovation and engineering?
• How has the science of design evolved from its beginnings starting from
the pioneering work of Herbert Simon and how design can supplement the
existing methods for design in software engineering?
• Beyond the software engineering community, what is the current state of
research in other related software design communities, mainly MIS, HCI,
open innovation and engineering?
• How can we integrate and cross-pollinate diverse design methods from
different communities and how to align them with the wider engineering and
innovation processes?
• Which existing design and open innovation approaches are well-suited to
study and model the large diversity of software systems and services?
• Which promising (new) research topics and data sources can design and
open innovation provide?
• How can crowdsourcing, user-centric design and design thinking
approaches be applied to engage stakeholders in solving software
engineering problems while helping to create innovative software systems?
We solicit:
• Research papers (max 7 pages) that describe evaluated research.
• Vision papers (max 4 pages) that show insights from other fields and how
they could be applied to software engineering, or that propose a research
agenda with a clear vision of what the future may look like in this area.
Submissions due: Friday January 20, 2017
Notification to Authors: Friday, February 17. 2017
Camera-ready: Monday, February 27, 2017
Workshop Date: Tuesday, May 23, 2017
We are looking forward to your contributions!
