*Group : CN Summit*
· Use pf the declaration and its purpose
· How to get everyone involved
· Levelling the playing field
· Need an oversight committee for preparatory process
· Must be a bottom up from regions to global
· Focus on commonalities
· Build on previous initiatives
· Gathering needed before the summit of the CNs – spaces to
accommodate local circumstances
· Risk – stress in the process may backfire
· Should not start with a blank page – but needs a framework document
to be setup
· Wireless international group is already meeting – need to ensure
their inclusion
· Role of woman to shape the process
*Group: Inclusivity*
· Inclusivity is a broad issue: Gender, territorial, Language
· Gender: Cultural constrains in general is noted; needs to be a
deepening of understanding of power relationships and roles of different
members of society in each region
· CN definition to help people realise if they need to be part of the
process
· Energy on putting action on sensitive groups – to empower
marginalised people in more roles
· Technologies that can be made your own has an important role e.g.
Alta Mundi
· As a collective of CNs – need to reflect more on what it means to
be more diverse and inclusive
· Actions must be undertaken as close to the ground as possible e.g.
local content process
· Regional diversity: No representation of the Asia-Pacific region –
must be addressed; note several examples from this region in GisWatch
· Language diversity: Regional discussions are very important;
therefore work at the regional level – before global level; noted that
Francophone not represented – must be addressed; See Alta Mundi translation
project – where communities undertook translation.
· Race is also an issue to be addressed
*Group: Policy *
· Work at national and regional level to obtain access to fibre and
spectrum – provide exemplars (write up cases) as to how this can be done
for others to learn from
· Similarly access to USFs – which must be more flexible in what they
fund e.g. skills development, tech development
· Spectrum Access: Has to be taken to regulators and a wider
community of stakeholders; therefore need to provide some information pack
in this regard
· Access to backhaul: Bring cases that can demonstrate benefits of
access; try to make governments look good in the process;
· Select best practice cases from different countries and provide
such info to government
· Problem of treating first nations as a country within a country
must be addressed
· GisWatch / or continuation can be used for advocacy purposes

This sounds like a well thought-out opportunity for supporting the skilling of CNs
If there is anything we can do from Nigeria, please register our support

Hi all, I am sharing a proposal for BTN from Eric Nitschke, which I have been asked whether the CNSIG is able to support. It is for an online course on CNs. Eric has worked in South Africa and has a technical background in implementing grassroots tech (working with CNs too) also developing online courses. We would need to give a response in the next 3 days.
I mentioned to Eric that the SIG would need to find a Chapter and draft an agreement with them to be able to apply. He has therefore drafted an MoU that we could use. Attached with the proposal below.
I am passionate about knowledge sharing and I don’t yet know what the most effective way would be to share skills between/ for CNs…. Beyond of course our peer to peer sharing which I find invaluable. I do think that exploring an online course is interesting, and also a course that would be presented through CN operators and give real case studies is the right way to go.
So, please read below and let me know a) if you would be OK to support, b) if you know a Chapter willing to sign an MoU which limits their input to covering costs of receiving and disbursing funds.

Subject: ISOC Beyond the Net Grant Proposal
Dear CNSIG Executive Committee,
This email and draft proposal within is the result of more than a year of conversations with countless people who seek to strengthen the capacity of community networks and the people they serve around the world.
My hope is to bring together the CNSIG, an ISOC Chapter to be determined, and my company, Wakoma Incorporated, to apply for the Beyond the Net Medium and Large Grant Programme, and build an open, social, and highly valuable eLearning course which is accessible to all, especially those in low-resource environments.
Given that the BTNG application is due on Monday, I have drafted much of the documentation required for the submission which you can find below.

All text, figures, and dates are drafts/suggestions and subject to your input and discussions which can take place in this email thread and by adding comments/replies directly in the documents. Given time constraints it may also make sense arrange a call tomorrow (Friday) or Monday morning.
I hope as a Committee you see the value that this project would bring and decide to submit this proposal together on Monday.
Greatly looking forward your thoughts and questions, and hopefully working together on this project and beyond.
Yours Sincerely,

Hi CNSIG-ers,
This year I am collaborating with the Internet Governance Forum's Best
Practice Forum on Gender and Access, and they/ we are looking for input
regarding opportunities and challenges faced by women and LGBTIQ people who
want to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.
There is interest in the experience we have as CNs. If you are willing and
able to contribute please spend a few minutes on the following survey,
before the 12th August.

For your info I include the official email with further information about
the BPF and its activities below.
Thank you, Sol
Since its launch in 2015, the
<https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/content/bpf-gender-and-access>
Best Practice Forum (BPF) on Gender and Access has focused on different
aspects of womens meaningful access to the Internet: online abuse and
gender-based violence (2015); barriers to accessing the Internet (2016);
identification of the needs and challenges of diverse womens groups with
respect to Internet access (2017); and the impact of supplementary models of
connectivity on womens Internet access (2018).
The BPF session at the 2018
<https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/lexicon/8#IGF> IGF emphasised the
need to consider what happens once women and LGBTIQ people have some form of
access to the internet? Does it mean they are automatically able to benefit
from this access? To participate online freely and with ease? To participate
in the <https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/lexicon/8#Digital_Economy>
Digital Economy in ways that improves their lives? In this context, in
response to input from people and organisations who have been part of this
BPF, it was decided that the focus of work in 2019 will be on "after access"
concerns, in particular the opportunities and challenges faced by women and
LGBTIQ people who want to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.
To help us move to the next phase of our work we would really value your
response to a short online survey by August 12.
The survey is at

https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/content/gender-bpf-gender-and-acces

Kindly fill out the survey and / or share it for input with your peers and
networks.
If you wish to join the discussions and stay updated with the BPF, you can
also join the Gender and Access Best Practice forum mailing list at

Dear Council members,
it took us some time to find a second member, that has capacity, experience and is willing to actively participate in the working groups…
We would like to authorize Adam Burns to represent us in the council as well. We collaborate since the early Freifunk days and he is well known across the scene. He has been representing community networking initiatives in general as a stakeholder across a broad spectrum of Technology, Policy and Regulatory issues.
Would you be so kind to add him to this list?
I look forward to your reply.
Best regards, Monic

Hi everyone,
The call for this year's Beyond The Net is open.
Are we planning to present any projects as the CNSIG?
If we do, we need to sign an agreement with a national chapter that's
willing to handle the project money.
Cheers,
Nico
