Hi CNSIGers,
I'm in the process of writing an article on local content in community
networks for the GISSWatch 2018. I'm focusing on our experience, but I'd
like to mention relevant initiatives or examples from other communities.
If anyone wishes to share a paragraph on experiences you have taken part
of, please contact me or just share in reply to this e-mail.

Dear Nico,
sounds interesting :)
In freifunk we just have some web cams and minecraft servers that are used actively and
some local repositories ... no one used our experiments with diaspora as fb alternative or
voip services over time.
In ancient times we run a local mirror of wikipedia... or did some live streaming from a
band in a bar. we also had shared tv settop boxes :)
My idea of local content for refugee camps never came to live due to capacity limits to
organize coops with people who could provide educational contents or faqs or other
relevant stuff. also we would have switched roles to decide, what kind of content is
there, if we would have organized it ... or at least you need to organize and enable it in
a very open way and educate even more ... content opens a new dimension in terms of
liability and responsibility and so on ...
My experience is, it would be hard to explain, if there is internet access at the same
time ... only if there is no www access there is a use case and strong need for local
services or content. and the idea of content centric networks (first ask your neighbor
before you reach out further) is not common or implemented ...

Hi Nico,
What you are writting about is an issue of great importance for all
community networks, as -in my opinion- is the ground on which the CNs can
buid their added value for the local communities and materialize a
significant competitive advantage vis-a-vis the incumbents.
In Sarantaporo we have not yet deployed local services of mass use, but we
have some insights from our local community on what could be useful. In
short:
- web cams to watch over their properties (houses, animal farms, etc)
- e-learning platform (e.g. Moodle, edX, ...) to facilitate distant
learning, such as basic computer usage, online security, personal data,
mobile phone usage, ..
- local hosting and storage service for their farming data, produced via
local digital farming services (like farmOS etc)
- bulettin board in the CN splash page for local news, festivities and
announcements
We have yet to prove that some or all of the above and still others are
elements that can provide local value. It is in our near future plans to
experiment on that.

I had written some time ago an article that summarizes four main reasons
(among others) why I think that local content makes sense:

have still not done our best to give a good chance to this model (and
implicitly why current mostly negative experiences shouldn't be seen as
credible reasons against it):
