Hello meshies
I know everybody is having fun at Battle Mesh, but if someone could take a
look at this I' d really appreciate.
I really have my eyes on the C50, as it seems to be the cheapest dual-band
on the market now. I can get on in Brazil for less than 40 USD! Last week I
bought one which I later found out to be an unsupported V2. But now I got a
V1, and it almost works. If it works, I'll the buy about 10 for an
installation in two weeks.
The problem seems to be with 802.11. The 2.4Ghz …
[View More]radio does not work in
ad-hoc mode - although the 5Ghz radio does. Then I don't know if it's
related, but when it meshes with a WDR3500, the Internet is painfully
slow, with some ping times about 1000-2000 milliseconds. Pinging from the
LiMe gateway at the same time gives me a steady 57ms. Perhaps a different
driver should be used?
Attached is a file with information gathered from the router.
A few other oddities (not as important as the issue above):
- Could not flash from stock directly with the compiled LiMe. I had to
first use this openwrt [1], then LiMe
- When I flash from the firmware above with the LiMe I compiled or the
download Lede, I get the message:
" It appears that you try to flash an image that does not fit into the
flash memory, please verify the image file!
Size: 7.63 MB (7.62 MB available)"
It works fine, tough.
- The firmware I cooked with my community settings (using cooker) won't go
through to the Internet, and gives this ESSID instead of my
community's:{{NETWORK_NAME}} (although it meshes with the LiMe gateway)
- The firmware I cooked without community settings connects to the Internet
through the LiMe gateway with the sluggish times above.
Thanks!

Hello,
Here we are considering again the captive portal thing. It would be a
welcome page with some community news, not real authentication. I guess
we would like a system where MAC addresses of users who just clicked an
"Ok" button of the splash page would be validated for a month. So they
would have to go through this News page once a month.
I've seen Nodogsplash seems to be maintained again, so I can try to make
it work for LiMe. But first I wanted to ask about Pitbull, as I think
that was …
[View More]something similar but specially made for LiMe.
What is the status of Pitbull?
Would it work for the described need?
Thank you!

Hey sisters,
Let me share some good news for community networks -and bad ones for ISPs:
0.- Bitmessage has been working on LAN peer auto-discovery. It is
already in v0.6 branch, we tested it and it works.
1.- Retroshare will finally have asynchronous messaging working
(Retroshare already has LAN peer auto-discovery).
2.- Impressive ZeroNet is aware of the importance of LAN peer
auto-discovery and they are going to add this feature.
Has anyone used a 3g/4g USB modem plugged into a LibreMesh-ed router as
their Internet connection? We want to know if it works, and how you
configured it.
In central Ecuador, we want to plug a USB cellular modem into a router
running LibreMesh, and use that as our Internet connection. It's
supposed to be a short-term solution while we work on getting a wired
connection, and given the conditions, it may turn out to be a decent
backup connection for a while. However, we'll calculate the …
[View More]long-term
costs compared to a wired connection, so the community can make an
informed decision.

After weeks of trial and error and troubleshooting on several different
Chef builds (1x ar71xx/wndr3700v2, 3x x86 of all different hardware),
default LiMe 802.11s profile, I've come to the conclusion that watchping or
some other link in the chain is failing to offer the gateway.
At any time, if any node loses WAN uplink, it and it's clients will sit
without internet for hours, while still communicating with all other nodes
and machines on the network.
After some chat in the dev channel, the …
[View More]fact that I was using USB WiFi
devices as WAN interfaces, set up with the LEDE/OPENWRT default WWAN iface
name, became suspect as the cause. Unfortunately however, neither changing
the reference in the watchping settings in /etc/config/system, nor changing
WWAN to WAN as the actual interface used made any difference. The nodes CAN
communicate (thus not the usual "can't ping" bug), Uplink is recognized as
lost by watchping, but the node with one does not ever offer it up.
Once again, this is with the default 802.11s profile, meaning BMX6. I have
not yet tried BMX7, as I'm not sure how to migrate from one to the other in
place.

Hi,
When discussing an issue on Github [0] it was considered the need for
some further talk on some LibreMesh topics.
A good way to trigger that talk could be to prepare a FAQ section that
would clarify some aspects of the project -maybe goal of LibreMesh, its
benefits, its network behavior, the ethics supporting that behavior,
security concerns, whatever.
Having a FAQ section could calm down some security-conscious people who
are becoming interested in community networks.
Please visit the …
[View More]etherpad [1] and add/change/delete whatever you want,
questions and answers. I dared to answer many things they might not be
correct. Same for grammar.
Once everyone is happy about the text, it would be very helpful to have
that FAQ on the website. Making things clear can boost the growth too,
and I might not need that network-profile I requested!! [0]

Hi everyone. I've got a 2 node system up and running and I wanted to
find out if there was any general advice on configuring this for a home
network to keep it secure. My neighbour and I share a common interest
in technology, but we agreed over the garden fence we didn't want to
share each of our home wifi networks or at this stage broadband,
although the broadband sharing might come later.
The libremesh site is helpful especially around what the config file
does, but I'm …
[View More]looking for any pointers or links to reference material on
home usage. In particular leveraging the mesh side to provide good home
coverage, but not open sharing with the outside world initially.
Anything the list members can point me at very much appreciated as both
of us have hunted round and the type of information we have found is a
bit too technical for either of us to apply.
Cheers
Dave

Some of you are going to the Internet Freedom Festival in Valencia March
5th to 9th? I'm not sure yet if I'm going this year.
