Hi,
I have seen different ways of configuring the firewall:
/etc/config/firewall
/etc/firewall.user
/etc/uci-defaults/whatever
Maybe there are more...
What are their differences?
When should I use each?

/etc/firewall.user is a script way (`iptables` blablabla)
/etc/config/firewall is an uci way in multiline format, as all
/etc/config stuff. and /etc/uci-defaults is a one-line way of
introducing uci config

But when should I use each?
I suggest you to use /etc/config/firewall editing that file or via WebGUI.
advanced iptables stuff not defined in uci use /etc/firewall.user (to
access directly iptables stuff).
use /etc/uci-defaults if you reach a bug and you cannot manage it with
uci config file or webgui

If I'm not wrong precedence is:
1. /etc/uci-defaults
2. /etc/firewall.user
3. /etc/config/firewall
meaning that 1 overrides what was already configured in 2 and 3
as you suggested to introduce some iptables commands, if you don't
want to learn how to use it in uci config (you probably can do it),
just put them in /etc/firewall.user
