Hi,
I'd like to LibreMesh a few RaspberyPi Zero W.
Which USB network interfaces are compatible for mesh ?
I'd like one with a removable antenna.

It then best to build the firmware using chef (BMX and 802.11s)

None. USB wifi is always shit. There haven't ever been really useful
USB WiFi dongles for several reasons. The closest it gets to are

Ok, I have ordered a four RT5370-USB adapters.
I am building a distributed wireless audio with shairport that will operate
4 nodes outdoors, plus a laptop. It will be running on four Rasp-Pi Zero W,
each equipped with a audio amplifier and Wifi-mesh through this external
adapter. The on-board WiFi could be used as an access-point.
So, Am I on the right track?

may work, but really don't expect any performance or range miracles

Why are you so keen on using that toy hardware? Using of-the-shelf
WiFi routers is so much more convenient and even cheaper than using
those RaspPi boards + Wifi dongles... Any reason why it got to be those
boards (which neither has any fast IO interfaces to attach proper
wireless hardware, nor any decent networking capabilities itself)?

Hi Daniel,
Your testimonies are beginning to raise concerns.
I went with the RaspPi Zero W because I can easily add an audio DAC and
2x40W amplifier <https://www.justboom.co/product/justboom-amp-zero-phat/>,
that also happen to act as a DC regulator for the RaspPi, all running from
a 3S LiPo. Then I can also monitor battery voltage using an available
analog-input.
The battery needs to last at least 9 hours, preferrably more. Using a 4000
mAh-3S, we can heathly use up to 2000 mAh before recharging. The audio
amplifier typically uses 200 mAh per day (tested, leaving 1800 mAh for the
rest).
I haven't received the RT5370-USB yet, but I have the rest of the hardware
and also 8 dBi antennas.
Honestly, I haven't even considered using routers. Should I ?

You will have to use Raspbian Linux not OpenWRT as the JustBoom Amp Zero
pHAT requires drivers from Raspbian which are not available in OpenWRT
(LibreMesh)
It is still possible to setup mesh on Raspbian but will require more effort

No
OpenWRT development follows a mainline kernel while Raspbian used own
board specific kernel version with own development process.
Raspbian uses DT overlays to enable features and functions like SPI,
I2C,I2S,Hats etc which don't all yet work in mainline kernel
Mainline just too far behind with specific support in many cases
It take longer for mainline to support all board specific features
I also have issues with OpenWRT because of this on for example Orange Pi
boards

Mark,
Setting up mesh on raspbian seems a daunting task indeed. Could you point
me in the right direction?
I've just succeeded in compiling bmx7 but it doesn't start (segmentation
fault).

board specific kernel version with own development process.
Raspbian uses DT overlays to enable features and functions like SPI,
I2C,I2S,Hats etc which don't all yet work in mainline kernel
Mainline just too far behind with specific support in many cases
It take longer for mainline to support all board specific features
I also have issues with OpenWRT because of this on for example Orange Pi
boards

You will have to use Raspbian Linux not OpenWRT as the JustBoom Amp
Zero pHAT requires drivers from Raspbian which are not available in
OpenWRT (LibreMesh)
It is still possible to setup mesh on Raspbian but will require more
effort

I went with the RaspPi Zero W because I can easily add an audio DAC
and 2x40W amplifier

happen to act as a DC regulator for the RaspPi, all running from a 3S LiPo.
Then I can also monitor battery voltage using an available analog-input.
The battery needs to last at least 9 hours, preferrably more. Using a
4000 mAh-3S, we can heathly use up to 2000 mAh before recharging. The audio
amplifier typically uses 200 mAh per day (tested, leaving 1800 mAh for the
rest).
I haven't received the RT5370-USB yet, but I have the rest of the
hardware and also 8 dBi antennas.
Honestly, I haven't even considered using routers. Should I ?

All the WiFi (brcmfmac) and networking related drivers are included in
OpenWrt, that's not really the problem.
The problem is more that those brcm27xx SoCs don't have any fast I/O
interfaces which would allow attaching a SoftMAC WiFi radio which
uses the mac80211 framework of the Linux kernel. Most boards use
either USB or SDIO to attach WiFi modules which are then usually
self-managed FullMAC radios, hence support for specific WiFi modes
or features depends on the vendor's closed-source firmware running
on those WiFi chip's built-in controller. If there are any mesh
features they are usually not interoperable with those of other
vendors...
The few USB-connected SoftMAC chips out there (ath9k_htc, rt2800usb)
do have limitations which are undesireable for mesh environments, such
as the number of associated WiFi peers being limited 7 or even less,
with undefined behaviour in case of more peers being around.

For audio purposes, many router boards these days come with some
audio features or at least the option to attach an audio codec
(such as Wolfson WM8731) to it. You could either use a router
with audio inputs/outputs or use a devboard (eg. VoCore2) and
attach a codec to its i2s/pcm interface and i2c bus yourself.
Performance-wise it's just much smarter to add audio features to
a networking device than adding networking (esp. mesh!) features to
a media-playback-centric device.
