I have played with Nanostation M5, and they work ok, but I am looking
for a more directional solution for a long distance poin-to-point link
within a noisy environment.
Maybe it's not just about the router, maybe I would have to get a

The AC version of these antennas is not supported yet by OpenWrt/LEDE
(note that they're not 802.11ac anyway, they're just evilUbiquiti

protocol [3]/hackers enemy [2,4] devices).
I hope we can find a better vendor (or wait for LibreRouter [5]).

PS always check to NOT flash LibreMesh on AirOS 5.6. Downgrade to
version 5.5 and is safe to flash.

You're right, the correct image is NOT bullet but loco-xw which is
equivalent to bullet image but for XW hardware (it would have been
easier if they called it bullet-xw).

PBE-M5-400 anymore in anyway I know.
Its only living signals now are the power led and the LAN led, the LAN
led flashes when it's got something plugged in, but that's all :/

Ilario taught me how to upload the firmware through TFTP. I could

always had a 'Firmware check failed' message, despite I properly checked
file integrity (MD5) of the firmwares I tried to install: OpenWRT
rocket-m-xw, the LiMe rocket-m-xw and AirOS xw v.5.5.6.
Didn't understand what exactly happened but somehow I managed to have
the AirOS xw v5.5.6 back to life after a proper reset. Apparently the
AirOS system was always there, healthy, and I did not notice.
So I happily started the upload of the correct firmware (rocket-m-xw)
through the GUI hoping this time will be fine because now I was choosing
the correct firmware. But then I had the same problem as when I started:
I uploaded the firmware, clicked on Update, everything looked fine but
the new firmware (OpenWRT or LiMe) was not being installed, the AirOS
firmware always stayed there.
So I decided to apply the command line workaround I tried before:
- Upload the image through GUI
- ssh ubnt(a)192.168.1.20
- fwupdate.real -m fwupdate.bin -d
Everything looked cool during the process but, again, when the update
apparently ended, I was exactly at the same point of my previous email:
The router again seemed bricked. Fortunately now I knew that patience
and a reset would take me again to AirOS v5.5.6. That's where I am now,
again.
I do not know how to flash OpenWRT or LiMe on this PBE-M5-400 router.
Any suggestion? If I don't receive any answer I will soon try to get rid
of this thingy.
Does anyone know any working LiMe router more unidirectional than the
NanoStation M5? I need something more unidirectional.
It does not have to be a new model. Actually, I prefer if it is an old
one, so that I can get a second-hand one.

Everything looked cool. The leds on the router did the Knight Rider
show. But then I could do nothing else. Now I cannot connect to the
PBE-M5-400 anymore in anyway I know.
Its only living signals now are the power led and the LAN led, the LAN
led flashes when it's got something plugged in, but that's all :/
Please help!

Does anyone know any working LiMe router more unidirectional than the
NanoStation M5? I need something more unidirectional.
It does not have to be a new model. Actually, I prefer if it is an old
one, so that I can get a second-hand one.

Let me ask you, are you using this M5 as an acess point? That is, are you
planning to use it to connect several antennas? Or are you making a
long-distance point to point connection? Because if it is the latter case,
there is not much sense in installing libre-mesh in it - after all, it will
only have two ports (wifi and ethernet). Not much meshing to be done there.
In these cases we usually leave AirOS in bridge mode (with WDS enabled) and
use libremesh in the routers connected to ir in both ends.

Thanks Bruno. The idea was to have LiMe routers everywhere, so that this
point-to-point link could become one day a point-to-multipoint link, or
even used as Access Point by any client that happens to be in the
middle, so I did not think much of other possibilities, but I like your
idea!

I wasn't able to flash
the PBE-M5-400 through the GUI.
When putting the 192.168.1.20 in the browser, I went to Firmware
Update, select my loco-m-xw factory bin and pressed "Upload".
Then I could read the statement "Uploaded Firmware Version:
XW.v6.0.0-OpenWrt-r49403".
I clicked on the "Update" button and saw the "Firmware is being
updated" window.
After some seconds that window closed and then I could normally log in
again to the airOS at 192.168.1.20 : ( Didn't understand what exactly happened but
somehow I managed to have
the AirOS xw v5.5.6 back to life after a proper reset. Apparently the
AirOS system was always there, healthy, and I did not notice.
Ok
So I happily started the upload of the correct
firmware (rocket-m-xw)
through the GUI hoping this time will be fine because now I was choosing
the correct firmware. But then I had the same problem as when I started:
I uploaded the firmware, clicked on Update, everything looked fine but
the new firmware (OpenWRT or LiMe) was not being installed, the AirOS
firmware always stayed there.
Fortunately now I knew that patience
and a reset would take me again to AirOS v5.5.6. That's where I am now,
again.
Looking on the internet doesn't look like there should be problems, I
don't understand.
Maybe you can try to move from AirOS 5.5.6 to another version,
whatever you manage to find, e.g. 5.5.10, never never 5.6.x.

to download so I uploaded two old AirOS 5.5.x images I had on my pc,
an XM image and an XW image:

I keep being unable to change the firmware. Now I have tried with
Ilario's XW v5.5.10-u2 and again everything looks like flashing but,
after the apparent flashing, when the router boots, it boots again
with the firmware it had.
To sum up the long story, so far I have only been able to flash this
router once. I needed to downgrade from version 5.6 to 5.5. As I could
not find the 5.5 version on the Internet I contacted Ubiquiti support.
They asked why I wanted to change the firmware, I answered because I
wanted to install OpenWRT. Then they sent me a link so that I could
download the firmware I requested. That was v5.5.6 (XW), and that is
the only firmware I have been able to install so far.
Now when I contact them they say the do not support nor recommend
installing OpenWRT.
