I just cooked a firmware with the cooker for the tp-link cpe-510. It is
similar to the nano loco m5 - 45 degrees horizontal angle, 13dbi, and 5ghz
only in this case. Costs around USD 65 here.
Everything seems to be fine. It uses adhoc mode by default, so it connected
immediately to a wdr3500 with lime 1605 from another network which I had
lying around.
The reason I'm flashing these is that we installed a small network in a
favela here last week, and the wdr3500 didn't have enough reach. Not only
the nearest nods were far (anything from 200m to 2km), but also all the
interference we had (it's a really dense neighborhood) made any link with
more than 100m very poor. The plan now is to connect the most important
nodes with those.

do you mean the link speed between two of them?
right now it is only 15mb over 2km, but thats because we wanted to have a
point-to-multipoint setup. so they're not pointed perfectly to each other,
but on the 45 degrees limit. but that might change as we keep looking for
other topographies for the network.

yeah, the link speed. Can you confirm 15mb over 2km is between the
cpe510 and the wdr3500?. I like that cpe but i know some features of it
may get lost when using openwrt.

in the same room, the wdr3500 and cpe510 connected with more than 100mb/,
although it's odd that they never show the same speed on both sides. is
there any way better than iwinfo to check it?

I confirm 15mb in the 2km connection, but it was made between two cpe510s
with original firmware (not flashed), not between wdr and cpe. and they
were not aligned, but about 30-40 degrees offset.

all credits to the chef cook!
i'm preparing the documentation about the installation, will post here when
it's done. but basically we got a grant from the state of rio to do a free
networks workshop in the favela, which would of course end up in a
functioning network. we got a link from the federal university nearby,
which was a great push.
we needed the gain, so there was no advantage to use another antenna.
but i just saw the omnidirectional hack on the openwrt wiki, seems neat.
we actually need to find a way of making a DIY directional antenna like the
altermundi model. we never found a metalsmith who could replicate it here.

Sounds like a fantastic plan. I don 't have proper documentation. But the
CPE's are running fine. We used them in two other networks with good
results.

How many CPE are connected together? How many clients per node? Are you using libremesh
