Hi all,
Merry festivities for all of you.
I think we need to allow all of us to reflect on this topic of the
Global Summit.
Have seen/read in some spaces the interest of ISOC to include people
(like the Partnership for Public Access, lead by IFLA and where people
from Microsoft/Facebook participate).
If we want to define the agenda and not the agenda be imposed on us
somehow... I think we need to be upfront on what we need the event to be
and to speak as early as possible so we can define the agenda the way we
need it.
Would like to propose to share this interest to trigger this
conversation in the African, Asian and Indigenous North American groups,
to try all-together to shape an amazing summit for us all, that can
serve us the way we need it to serve us.
Just some random thoughts that came to mind... so, the proposed
actionables are:
* continue discussing about:
http://nicolasacco.diveni.re/~gio/asciipad/CNSIG_CouncilMeeting20181115Pari…
* what do you think about bringing this discussion to the other spaces?
let them discuss and then we can find each other with some idea of what
each region needs
Shall we give us 10 days for the 2nd, and 15 days for the first one, to
see how it goes?
Happy holidays everyone!
Hi all,
We have received communication from ISOC regarding the annual chapters
and SIGs evaluation. This requires completing information in the online
ISOC platform which I'll be doing soon.
Those who have participated in events using the "CNSIG hat", please send
a one paragraph summary (and any relevant links) so we can add it to the
activities form in the platform. Out of the top of my head I can
remember participation in "Mesh is in the air", participation in two
african events, participation/organization of the LAC CN Summit and
participation in the IGF2018 after-event meeting.
We also need to organize our annual Council Meeting.
An important excerpt from the Bylaws[1]:
"
The officers of the Executive council shall be Chair, Vice Chair,
Secretary and Treasurer.
Alternate members must be appointed for Secretary and Treasurer.
The officers shall be elected at the Annual Council Meeting. Officers
must be members
-representing an Organization- of the Executive Council to be elegible
for office.
Officers shall take office immediately upon election and serve until
their successor is elected. They
shall serve for one (1) year. Consecutive re-election to occupy any
office will only be allowed for
three terms.
All candidates to officer positions shall present their candidacy,
including a program and a
declaration of interests, at least 30 business days before the Annual
Council meeting.
[...]
The Annual Council meeting shall be held at the last meeting of the
program year. At this meeting,
the Secretary and Treasurer each shall
present a report. Also, the election of officers for the
Council, Standing committees and temporary committees shall be held.
Also, the Chair shall announce the results of the election of officers
which may have been held
through e-mail ballot, for the coming year
"
These are our current executive council officers:
Chair Nicolás Echániz
Vice Chair Sol Luca de Tena
Treasurer Karla Velasco
Alternate Treasurer Gioacchino Mazzurco
Secretary Manuela González Ursi
Alternate Secretary Peter Bloom
So, according to our bylaws, anyone willing to be considered for a
position should "present their candidacy, including a program and a
declaration of interests, at least 30 business days before the Annual
Council meeting." Please do so soon!
According to these requirements, the meeting will need to occur during
the last weeks of January.
Let's decide on a suitable meeting date; can someone get on top of
coordinating this?
Cheers!
Nico

Hi there,
This is extremely last minute but I'm going to submit a session proposal for RightsCon tonight about community networks (the deadline is in a few hours). I wanted to know if anyone else was planning to be there in Tunis, June 2019?
The format I'm going to choose is "Fishbowl" so we can use it as an opportunity to meet and have a discussion among anyone who's planning to be there. But let me know if you plan on being there ASAP and would like me to include you in the proposal!
cheers,
Mai
Hi All,
I think it would be a good practice for our group to follow up on our organization plans shared during our meeting[1], so we can keep the collective links alive.
I wanted to let you all know that as of yesterday AlterMundi was granted operator license in Argentina. It's the first license for community networks.
This is an important step to push for access to Universal Service Funds.
I'll keep you posted on news on that front.
Here is the license document:
https://blog.altermundi.net/media/uploads/licenciaaltermundi-1895-18_resol.…
And this is the resolution we got passed in august making the special licensing for community networks possible:

Cheers!

Hello,
I just came accross this initiative and I was wondering if it is of
interest for the CNSIG (or the LibreMesh Router project?).

Any thoughts?

Although some of you already know, I realized that we've missed to
inform at this list on this. I've to write here more often!
After many years dealing with multiple controversies at "domestic" level
in Spain, we thought that is time to raise this up to International
levels, so we recently we formally asked for assistance at the European
Ombudsman, and for that purpose, we elaborated a report (attached). A
part of this there are several megabytes of information that can't be
attached in an email, providing evidences of dozens of cases.
We think is important to fight this not only at domestic level but also
to international levels for two important reasons:
1. Although the examples we provide are fro Spain, we all know that the
described or similar practices are also often globally used against
CN. (International laws not being enforced at domestic levels,
clientelism, conflicts of interest, overbuilding & hoarding in a few
hands while many unattended, etc...).
At the end of the day conceptually is the same fight as the
spectrum, but extended to other subjects.
2. It's so difficult to fight at local level when actually who fails
and we are denouncing at the same time is the judge. Fight for
corruption against well established cartels or local authorities
doing maladministration requires to be able to go to international
bodies.
Today at the meeting with the MEP's from the EU Parliament, they
suggested to send the report not only to the Ombudsman, but also to the
EU Commission or the EU Parliament. When some days ago we wto the EU
office in Barcelona to formally give the complaint in person, some
colleagues from Europe came with us. That was great, so could be a good
idea to check is we can add cases from abroad (not only EU) thus
reinforcing the argument that this should be considered not only
domestic affairs but also a global problem, or signatures from CNs or
orgs from other countries giving support.
So please, those of you who can document other cases, or just willing to
give us support either at personal or org level, tell us!

p.d. anyone interested in getting more details/information, just ask,
Hi everyone,
The IGF in Paris is almost here. Panos and NicoPace have confirmed a
location for our gathering:
Gaite Lyrique
3bis Rue Papin, 75003 Paris
https://goo.gl/maps/LrY4fbfnUoQ2
The CNSIG meeting will occur the 15th starting at 9AM and ending at noon.
In the afternoon we will have an open meeting with other people that are
related to Community Networks issues in the same location.
Our proposed meetig agenda so far:
- what is the role of our Trusted Advisors, how do we invite them to get
more involved in the CNSIG?
- LAC Summit document[1]. Does the global CNSIG wish to discuss and/or
support the document?
- Regional CNSIG groups. We have created the LAC CNSIG group, Sol is
working on the African group. Does it make sense to create similar
initiatives for other regions? How do regional groups integrate with the
global CNSIG.
- Global Community Networks summit. Do we want to be in charge of such
an event? Who can help make it happen? ISOC will very probably provide
funding during 2019.
- Why have we created the CNSIG and what do we want to do with it?
- Update of the work that we have done until now.
- Sol would like to share about the African base CNs, the communication
channels that could be most effective and the relation to the CNSIG.
- Appropriation of the community network narrative and avoiding to
become "cheap labor" for "connecting the unconnected" to Facebook and
Google's servers.
Matters that we consider to be more general and less directly related to
the CNSIG can be discussed in the afternoon in the open meeting.

Regards,
Buenos días a todes,
estaba pensando que tal vez estaría bueno poder conversar un poco sobre
cómo se presenta y/o representa el CNSIG en París, en vistas que la
reunión de consejo es posterior al IGF.
______
Good morning to all,
I was thinking that maybe it would be nice to be able to talk a bit
about how the CNSIG is presented and / or represented in Paris, in view
that the council meeting is after the IGF.
